5 Questions Port Jefferson Patients Ask About Tinnitus

By the time most people sit down in our office to talk about the ringing, buzzing, or hissing in their ears, they've already read a dozen articles online, and half of them seem to contradict the other half. So we thought it made sense to answer the questions we actually hear in the exam room every week, straight from the audiologist who sees tinnitus patients here in Port Jefferson.
Will my tinnitus ever go away on its own?
Sometimes, yes. If it showed up after a loud concert or a single night of noise exposure, it can fade within a day or two as your ears recover. Tinnitus tied to earwax buildup, certain medications, or a cold can also resolve once the underlying cause clears up. But for a lot of patients, especially those with some degree of hearing loss or years of noise exposure behind them, the tinnitus is more persistent. That doesn't mean nothing can be done. It just means "waiting it out" usually isn't the plan we'd recommend.
Is tinnitus a sign that something is seriously wrong with my hearing?
Not usually, and this is probably the question we get asked with the most anxiety behind it. Tinnitus is most often linked to some degree of noise-induced or age-related hearing loss, which is common and very manageable. In rare cases it can point to something that needs medical attention, like a vascular issue or a problem with the inner ear, which is exactly why we start every new tinnitus patient with a proper hearing evaluation rather than guessing. That evaluation gives us a clear picture and rules out the things that matter. Most of the time, what we find is treatable.
Can hearing aids help with tinnitus even if I don't have significant hearing loss?
They can, and this surprises a lot of patients. Even a mild, hard-to-notice hearing loss can be enough for the brain to "fill in the silence" with phantom noise, and modern hearing aids address that by restoring the sounds your ears have been missing. For patients whose hearing tests come back essentially normal, we'll typically look at sound therapy or a tinnitus-specific program instead of hearing aids alone. There isn't a one-size answer here. What works depends entirely on what your individual hearing profile looks like.
What's this Lenire device I keep reading about, and does Port Jefferson Hearing offer anything like it?
Lenire is a bimodal neuromodulation device that's gotten a lot of attention for its clinical trial results, and patients bring it up more than almost anything else we get asked about. It works by pairing sound with mild tongue stimulation to retrain how the brain processes tinnitus signals. We don't currently fit Lenire in our office, but we do offer Tinnitus Pro, a personalized program built on the same research-backed foundation as our LACE auditory training, combining sound therapy, cognitive behavioral tools, and guided meditation into one plan a patient can use at home.
If Lenire is something you're specifically curious about, we're happy to talk through how it compares to what we offer and help you figure out which approach fits your situation.
What's the first step if I want to do something about my tinnitus?
Start with a tinnitus evaluation. We'll take a full history, test your hearing, and talk through what your tinnitus sounds like, when it's worse, and how it's affecting your day-to-day life, because that information shapes everything that comes after it. From there we can map out real options, whether that's hearing aids, Tinnitus Pro, or a combination approach. Patients tell us the hardest part is usually just making the appointment. Once you're in the chair, we take it from there.
