An Audiologist's Take on Oticon Reveal

October fills the calendar with harvest dinners, football afternoons, and backyard fire pits. These are some of the best moments of the year, and they are also some of the hardest listening situations for anyone with hearing loss. Several people talk at once, and the conversation moves around the room quickly. Oticon Reveal, Oticon's newest rechargeable hearing aid, was designed with these moments in mind, and it is one of the technologies we can consider when fitting patients at Port Jefferson Hearing.
Why Fall Gatherings Are Hard to Follow
When patients describe their hearing difficulties, trouble understanding speech in background noise comes up more than any other concern. A quiet conversation may feel manageable, while a kitchen full of relatives talking over a football game can leave you nodding along and missing the punchline.
Part of the challenge is that much of the sound in these settings is worth hearing. Laughter at the other end of the table, a grandchild calling your name, and the crackle of the fire are all part of being there. How a hearing aid balances speech with its surroundings matters a great deal.
How Oticon Reveal Handles Competing Voices
Oticon describes Reveal as the world's first hearing aid powered by Dual AI. One system, Speech AI, continuously identifies and clarifies speech from the people around you. The second, Context AI, recognizes meaningful surrounding sounds and keeps them in balance with that speech. According to Oticon, the two systems work together continuously in real time within a processing stage the company calls the Reveal AI Clarifier.
Oticon frames the goal as finding each person's "balance point," where speech is clear and relevant context is preserved. At a fall gathering, that means Reveal is designed to bring forward the voice of the person you're talking with while keeping a natural sense of the room around you. Oticon reports up to 12 dB of noise suppression in its top technology level, and says 94% of hearing aid users in its testing preferred Reveal over Oticon Intent. These are manufacturer results, and we treat them as a starting point for evaluating how Reveal performs for each patient.
Features That Matter Around the Table
A few other features are relevant to social settings:
- Reveal Optimizer: Oticon's updated feedback system, which the company says prevents feedback 30% faster. This added headroom can help with open and vented fittings, allowing more of the prescribed high-frequency amplification with less risk of whistling.
- Streaming Comfort: When you stream a phone call or game audio, this feature lowers surrounding sound by about 10 dB. You can adjust the amount in the app, or we can set it during your fitting.
- Connectivity: Reveal is made for iPhone, optimized for Android, and supports Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast broadcast audio. Oticon reports up to 32% greater streaming range and 53% better connection stability compared with Oticon Intent.
What Your Evaluation and Fitting Look Like
Every hearing aid fitting at our office begins with a comprehensive hearing evaluation with Dr. John Martinetti, our Board Certified Audiologist. Dr. Martinetti measures the softest sounds you can hear, then uses recorded word testing and the QuickSIN speech-in-noise test to understand how well you follow conversation in noise. He also reviews your medical history and uses a standardized hearing survey to set treatment goals around the situations you care about most. We recommend that adult patients bring a friend or significant other to the first visit, and the people you gather with often have helpful perspective on where conversations become difficult.
If Reveal looks like a good match for your hearing and lifestyle, Dr. Martinetti will give you a live demonstration in quiet and in background noise. From there, our hearing aid test drive lets you take hearing aids home and try them at your own fall gatherings, with no deposit and no financial obligation. Reveal may be the right choice, or another option may fit your needs better, and the test drive gives you real experience to base that decision on.
