Oticon Intent vs. Oticon Zeal: Which One Is Right for You?

The short answer: Oticon Intent and Oticon Zeal are both premium hearing aids built on the same powerful Sirius chip, but they serve different needs. Intent is a behind-the-ear receiver-in-canal (RIC) style, and Zeal is an in-the-ear style designed for people who want something nearly invisible. The right choice depends on your lifestyle, your degree of hearing loss, and your priorities.

What They Have in Common

Both devices are built on Oticon's Sirius platform and share several core technologies:

  • BrainHearing technology, which supports the brain's natural way of processing sound by providing access to a full, balanced sound environment
  • Deep Neural Network (DNN) AI processing, which is always on and helps clarify speech in noisy situations
  • MoreSound Intelligence 3.0 for a more natural listening experience
  • Rechargeable batteries with up to 20 hours of use per charge
  • Bluetooth LE Audio with Auracast compatibility for streaming in public venues
  • Connectivity to iOS and Android devices, with support for the Oticon Companion app

If you're weighing these two models, know that you're not trading down in sound quality with either one.

Oticon Intent: Designed Around Your Movement

Oticon Intent uses 4D Sensor technology, which sets it apart. The hearing aid tracks inputs from your conversation activity, body movement, head movement, and the acoustic environment around you — all at once. This allows it to adjust support dynamically based on what you're actually trying to do, not just what's happening around you.

Intent is a RIC (receiver-in-canal) style, meaning the main body sits behind the ear with a thin wire leading to a speaker in the ear canal. This design allows for:

  • Dual microphones, which enable directional hearing and beamforming for more precise speech focus
  • A wider fitting range, accommodating mild to severe hearing loss
  • Features like Spatial SpeechFocus and an Intent-Based Spatial Balancer, which help separate speech from background noise using both movement data and acoustic information

Intent is a strong choice for active individuals, people who spend time in complex listening environments, or those with moderate to severe hearing loss.

Oticon Zeal: Designed to Go Unnoticed

Oticon Zeal is the world's most discreet complete hearing aid, according to Oticon. It sits entirely in the ear, with a design that is not visible in nearly three-quarters of ears when properly fitted. For many people who have put off addressing hearing loss due to the visibility of traditional devices, Zeal removes that barrier.

The engineering behind Zeal is worth understanding. Oticon developed a micro-encapsulation process that seals all electronics inside a solid protective structure, making the device moisture-resistant (IP68-rated), durable, and compact enough to house a rechargeable battery — something rarely seen in a device this size.

Zeal uses a single microphone, so it relies on the natural pinna (outer ear) effect for spatial cues, combined with its DNN 2.0 for noise reduction. In testing, Zeal delivers up to 6 dB of signal-to-noise ratio improvement. It doesn't use classic dual-mic beamforming the way Intent does, which is a relevant distinction for people with more challenging hearing needs.

Zeal's fitting range covers roughly mild to moderately severe hearing loss with dome fittings, extending further with custom micro-molds. It also offers a same-day fitting option, which is a practical advantage.

The wrap-around antenna serves triple duty — it improves Bluetooth signal stability by maintaining skin contact, acts as a retention arm, and functions as an extraction cord for easy removal.

How to Choose

Oticon Intent vs Oticon Zeal: Hearing Aid Comparison

Neither device is universally better — they're built for different priorities. If discretion is your top concern and your loss falls within Zeal's fitting range, it's worth serious consideration. If you spend a lot of time in noisy environments and want the most sophisticated directional processing available, Intent may serve you better.
