- Hearing aids cannot be fitted with a simple hearing test.
- Hearing aid effectiveness is primarily in the hands of the skilled audiologist or hearing aid dispenser.
- Customer service before and after the hearing aid purchase is essential for patient satisfaction.
- All patients have unique hearing needs. Dr Martinetti will listen to what hearing parameters matter to each patient.
- The most expensive hearing aids are the ones that you won’t wear!
Common Questions About Our Prices
What are hearing aid technology levels?
Why is hearing aid pricing based on technology levels?
All hearing aid manufactures invest millions into research and development to create a premium product. Technology levels from premium to basic allow dispensers to offer different levels of product with varied pricing. Premium hearing aid pricing may not be affordable to all consumers.
Do I need a prescription or test to buy programmable hearing aids?
Yes: Hearing aids are available via prescription from a licensed Hearing Health Care professional: audiologist or hearing aid dispenser. However, hearing aids cannot merely be fitted with a hearing screening or basic hearing test. In our opinion it is unwise to buy hearing aids online without professional counseling and Best Practice Diagnostic/Fitting Guidelines from a Doctor of Audiology. Are the hearing aids I see on TV any good?
Many of the products advertised on TV are not hearing aids. They are personal sound amplification products or PSAPs. In 2017 Congress passed a law creating a new category of hearing aids called “OTC” hearing aids. They are available without prescription. The FDA has until August 2020 to publish proposed guidelines for new OTC hearing aids.
See below for a comparison of the three categories of hearing devices:
Programmable Hearing Aids
Hearing aids are medical devices regulated by the FDA intended for people with hearing loss from mild to profound. They are programmed for your specific hearing loss via a prescription. An audiologist or hearing aid dispenser will test your hearing in an office setting and custom fit them. All maintenance, reprogramming, patient instruction is usually included.
OTC Hearing Aids
OTC hearing aids are a brand new class of hearing device. The FDA regulations must be in place by 2020 for OTC hearing aids. They are available online and arrive in the mail with no prescription needed. They have disclaimers saying not for people younger than 18 and not for severe hearing loss. Most mail order hearing aids are not programmable for your exact hearing loss, they are preset – or they expect the consumer to program them on their own. According to the American Academy of Audiology, “No studies suggest that consumers can differentiate degree, type or etiology of hearing loss, or to discriminate those hearing losses that require audiological or medical intervention.” Can you?
PSAPs (Personal Sound Amplification Products)
PSAPs amplify all sound – wanted and unwanted – by using a microphone, amplifier and receiver. According to the FDA, “PSAPs are intended to amplify environmental sound for non-hearing impaired consumers”. They are available on line, at Amazon, in big box stores and in drug stores without a prescription. They must be sold for “hearing enhancement” only.
